The most important part of the recording process

When you capture the sound you want from the source, the rest of the process is made easy. From recording vocals to recording the guitar cab, the right microphone makes a big difference.

Preamplifiers

When capturing sound, the most important piece of equipment is the microphone. But a microphone is only as good as the preamp you are putting it through, and it is greatly influenced by the room you are recording in. We specialise in the recording of acoustic instruments and as such have a purpose built live room which is totally isolated and acoustically tuned. Couple this with a choice of new and vintage tube preamps and compressors we have the ability to create any colour or texture required.

Our input chain can match the quality and variety of any studio in Australia.

RCA Preamps x 4

This 50's RCA broadcast preamp was racked, modernised and services by Pro-Harmonics in Adelaide. Clean, defined, with a gentle sheen. Very neutral and yet very musical.

BBC valve preamp

This preamp was taken from the BBC studios in London. Made in the 60's it has been racked, modded and serviced by Analogue-Addicts in London. Loaded with 9 valves, and driven by a giant output transformer this preamp has a deep creamy sound, making any instrument or microphone sound lush. It has two input transformers one at 50 ohm and the other at 200 ohm, so any microphone that exists can be used; even vintage ribbons like our STC  (also from the BBC studios). The input staging allows from gentle colouration to crunchy saturation. A little shy on the very highs, it lends itself best to the Sinatra/ Crosby era vocals, and blues, or for acoustic instrument use.

Sebatron  tube preamps x 6

Sebatron is simply one of the best modern preamps ever made. We have tested this preamp against the Universal Audio 610 and it won hands down for clarity and depth. We tested it against the EMI Redd, and it again came out on top, even though the difference was very minimal. Everything that passes through this preamp sounds remarkable. It is proudly Australian made.

Help Center

What’s on Your Mind?

What sound boards do you use?

We do not use an outboard desk for recording, but we do for summing. Instead we have many, varied preamps, all with their own unique flavour to record with. These vary from vintage solid state RCA preamps to valve Sebatron preamps and a solid state Focusrite One. Coupled with our UA "unison preamps" we have all the options from crystal clear to creamy tube, or fabulous harmonic distortion covered.

How much does a recording session cost?

Everyones' needs are different, but it's possible to record a full acoustic album in a matter of hours, if the artist is practised and experienced, and can lay down the tracks effortlessly. It is also possible to spend months on an intricate, complex body of works which will require multiple sessions. So the cost is a reflection of the time spent in the studio, and the time spent by the engineers or producers, and of course the equipment required.

Can I rent the entire studio?

This is a small boutique studio, so any rental will mean that you will have use of the entire studio, it also means that no-one else will be working there at the same time. It's a private, personal and personalised experience. We live and work on site, so evening access to the studio would need to be negotiated.
